Chalk Cafe

Okay, so I'm basically a new born to Chalk signage, I have some questions hopefully some of you pros can answer?
1. Do you prepare your own boards? do you use that chalk board paint to make them?
2. Do some of you use actual pastels? you can't seriously be doing all this great work with just Chalk Ink markers, and if so how do you seal them so they don't smudge?
3. pastel and pastel pencils, thoughts?

1. Yes, I do all my own, but thats mostly because the store won't actually spring for real/quality boards. I mostly use colaplast board that I paint with the Rustoleum chalkboard paint (the brush-on, not the spray). It's light weight and can be cut into shapes alot easier than plywood. I used to use foam-core board, but it warps pretty badly once the wet ink dries. I'll also use that paint to make just about any other surface (plywood, masonite, laminate, whatever) useable as a board, it works pretty well as long as you don't need to erase and redo the board often.

2. Everything I have posted is 100% chalk marker (ok, one exception, see if you can find it, lol) I use a few different brands, not just Chalk Ink, but I have really gotten a pretty good idea of how they work and I haven't used real pastels for several years. There is no need to seal the chalk markers, once dry they are pretty solid.(although I think you were referring to sealing the real chalk) There are various spray fixatives out there, but I don't have much experience with any of them.

3. Don't use them.

Thanks Jason!
